Mathias Steinauer was born in Basel and studied piano, composition (Robert Suter / Roland Moser) and music theory (Wolfgang Neininger) at Basel Academy of Music. From 1986 until 1988 – composition studies under György Kurtág, Budapest. Since 1986 – teaches music theory and gives courses in new music and composition at Zurich University of the Arts. 2004 – artistic director of the ISCM New World Music Days "trans_it". He has performed and/or lectured at various schools of music, symposia and festivals in many European countries, and in Azerbaijan, China, Brazil, the USA and Japan. XAVIER DAYER, b. 1972

Xavier Dayer was born in Geneva. He studied composition with Eric Gaudibert in his native city and later with Tristan Murail and Brian Ferneyhough at the IRCAM and the Fondation Royaumont in Paris. He received a diploma in classic guitar from the Conservatoire de Fribourg, where he studied under the tutelage of Matthias Spaeter. He is the winner of several composition awards, including the prize of the Bürgi-Willert Foundation awarded by Heinz Holliger and the FEMS prize of the Sandoz Foundation, awarded by Henri Dutilleux. He has received numerous commissions by the Grand-Théâtre de Genève, the Opéra de Paris, the IRCAM, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the SWR-Vokalensemble of Stuttgart, the Ensemble Contrechamps, the Ensemble Collegium Novum Zürich, the Neue Vocalisten Stuttgart, the Niew Ensemble Amsterdam, the Orchestre de chambre de Lausanne, the festival Archipel and so on. A feature concert was dedicated to him by The Festival d'Automne in Paris in 2004 and 2007. His opera "Mémoires d'une jeune fille triste" saw its world premiere at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in May 2005. The Atelier Lyrique of the Opéra National de Paris commissioned a new chamber opera entitled "Les Aveugles", which had its premiere in June 2006. His work "Delights" for eight voices, ensemble and electronics, which was commissioned by the IRCAM, premiered in May 2007 in the Cité de la Musique in Paris played by the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Since 2004, Xavier Dayer is professor at Berne University of the Arts (HKB / HEAB), where he will head the course "MA Music Composition/Theory" from 2009 onwards. LEO DICK, b. 1976

Leo Dick. geboren 1976 in Basel, begann 1995 in Basel und Bern, Germanistik, Musik- und Theaterwissenschaft zu studieren und arbeitete nebenher als Korrepetitor und Arrangeur am Stadttheater Biel. 1997 übersiedelte er nach Berlin und nahm an der Hochschule der Künste das Studium der Komposition bei Prof. Friedrich Goldmann auf, das er 2003 abschloss, und studierte daneben Musiktheaterregie an der HfM Hanns Eisler. Aufführungen seiner Werke erfolgten u. a. im Rahmen der Klang-werkstatt Kreuzberg, der Reihe Unerhörte Musik’, des Festivals Ultraschall’ in Berlin, am internationalen Beethovenfest Bonn, an den Festspielen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, auf Kampnagel (Hamburg), in den Sophiensaelen Berlin und in der Neubrandenburgischen Philharmonie. Dabei kam es zur Zusammenarbeit mit namhaften Formationen wie dem ensemble mosaik, dem RIAS- Jugendorchester, dem ensemble adapter, dem Chor hark! und den Neubrandenburger Philharmonikern. In einem einjährigen Aufenthalt in Lyon (2000) beschäftigte er sich als Gast im Tonstudio des CNSM gezielt mit intermedialen Kompositionstechniken und Interaktivität im szenischen Kontext. In Verarbeitung dieser Erfahrungen brachte er in der Folge mehrere Arbeiten, die sich zwischen Klanginstallation und Musiktheater-performance bewegen, zur Aufführung am Gare du Nord Basel, den Kulturhallen Dampfzentrale Bern, dem Stadttheater Bern und dem Ballhaus Naunynstrasse Berlin. Seine Arbeit Métaharmonie – Hommage à Jean Tinguely‘ wurde 2004 mit dem 1. Preis des Kompositionswettbewerbs der HMT Zürich ausgezeichnet und auf der DVD Farblichtmusik des 20./21. Jahrhunderts‘ (erschienen 2006) veröffentlicht. 2003 war er massgeblich an der Gründung des Kulturfördervereins Klangnetz e. V. beteiligt und betreute als hauptverantwortlicher Projektleiter verschiedene Veranstaltungen der Konzertreihe Klangnetz, u. a. das Austauschkonzert Berlin/ Schweiz „vis-à-vis“. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als freischaffender Komponist, Regisseur und Kulturmanager arbeitete er als Regieassistent am Stadttheater Luzern (Saison 04/05), als Lehrer für Musiktheorie an der Musikschule Bern (2005) und als Produktionsassistent am Festival Rümlingen (2006). Seine szenische Kantate Die Vögel‘ (nach Aristophanes) wurde im Herbst 2005 mit grossem Erfolg in Bern, Basel und Zürich herausgebracht. Im April 2007 wurde sein Musiktheaterprojekt Kann Heidi brauchen, was es gelernt hat?‘ in einem Wettbewerb des Fonds experimentelles Musiktheater NRW‘ mit einem mit 80000 € dotierten Förderpreis ausgezeichnet. Die Uraufführung fand am 6. Juni 2008 im Theater am alten Markt Bielefeld statt, weitere Aufführungen folgen u.a. im September 2008 im Rahmen der Biennale Bern und im November beim Meeting Music Theatre Now‘ des Internationalen Theaterinstituts ITI. Im Herbst 2007 wurde er als Stipendiat in das Akademieprogramm Musiktheater heute‘ der Deutschen Bank aufgenommen. Seit Anfang August 2008 ist Leo Dick als Assistent im Studiengang Théatre Musical an der Hochschule der Künste Bern beschäftigt.

Hans-Ulrich Lehmann. Born 1937 in Biel. He studied music at the conservatories of Biel, Zurich and Basel with master classes in composition headed by Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. His academic music studies took place at the University of Zurich under Kurt von Fischer. Between 1961 and 1972 he taught at the Basel Academy of Music. From 1969 until 1990 he was a tutor of new music and music theory at the University of Zurich, and in 1990 he taught at the University of Bern. In 1972 he taught composition and music theory at the ‘Musikhochschule Zürich’ (Zurich School of Music). From 1976 until 1998 he has been director of both the music school and the conservatory of Zurich. Between 1983 and 1986 he was president of the Swiss Musicians Association. Since 1987 he has been an executive member, and since 1991 president of SUISA (Swiss Performing Rights Society). Mischa Käser. Born 1959 in Zurich, Käser produced his first compositions as a child, and had the feeling he could experience the world musically. 1978 - 1982 Studied guitar at the 'Musikhochschule Zurich / Winterthur' (Zurich / Winterthur School of Music) with diploma. 1980 - 1983 Master classes. 1983 - 1985 Studied composition under Hans-Ulrich Lehmann in Zurich. 1985 - 1989 Studied composition under Roland Moser at the 'Musikhochschule Basel' (Basel School of Music). 1987 - 1989 Studied lute in Basel at the Schola Cantorum. Subsequent to 1990 he received his first experiences in composing and performing for theatre, he was later to become the director of his own theatre and music theatre projects. Käser is the founder of various ensembles, the most recent being the improvisation trios III. VII, XII, with whom he performs as a vocalist. Mischa Käser lives as a guitar teacher, composer, director and musician in Zurich, his compositional strong points being vocal music, chamber music and musical theatre. Prizes: 1992 Zurich sabbatical year, 1996 Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Prize, 1998 First prize: Prix International de Composition Musicale ' Reine Marie José' for the orchestral piece 'Ordouble'.

Roland Dahinden. Born 1962. Studies in trombone and composition at Musikhochschule Graz (Erich Kleinschuster, Georg F. Haas), Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Vinko Globokar), Wesleyan University Connecticut (Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier) and Birmingham University England (Vic Hoyland). 1989: Artist in residence at The A. Guthry Art Centre, Monahan, Ireland. 1990: Composer fellowship, one year residency in London. 1992-95: Assistent of Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University. 1994: Master of Arts in Music at Wesleyan University. 1994-95: Scholar in residence at Wesleyan University. 1997: Artist in residence at the Intermedia Spritzenhaus, Hamburg. 1998-2002: PhD program in composition at Birmingham University. 2002: Doctor of Philosophy in Music at Birmingham University. 2003: prize "Werkjahr" of the art council of the canton Zug, Switzerland. 2005: The CD 'silberen' picked as one of the 'Top Classical Albums of the Year 2004' by the arts journal The New Yorker. As a trombonist he spezializes in the performance of contemporary music and improvisation/jazz, concerts in various countries of Europe, in America and Asia. Composers such as Peter Ablinger, Maria de Alvear, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Peter Hansen, Hauke Harder, Bernhard Lang, Joelle Léandre, Alvin Lucier, Chris Newman, Pauline Oliveros, Hans Otte, Lars Sandberg, Wolfgang von Schweinitz, Daniel Wolf and Christian Wolff wrote especially for him. Since 1987 he works in the duo with Hildegard Kleeb and since 1992 together in the trio with the violonist Dimitrios Polisoidis. Maria Porten. Geb.1939 in Neuss, Deutschland; Studium der Schulmusik, Germanistik und Philosophie in Köln; Musikwissenschaft und Dissertation bei Kurt von Fischer, Zürich (Zum Problem der Form bei Debussy, 1972); Lehraufträge an verschiedenen Schulen in Deutschland, USA, Zürich; seit 1985 Schweizerin. Ab 1995 eigene Kompositionen (privates Studium bei Daniel Mouthon und Werner Bärtschi). In ihren Konzertprojekten engagierte Maria Porten sich für aktuelle Problematik: z.B. Im Zeichen der Schildkröte, 2003, gegen den Irak-Krieg; in Advent der Tiere, 2004, gegen Massentierhaltungen; in 11.Juli 1995 protestierte sie gegen die ethnischen Säuberungen in Srebrenica; das Projekt Ferne Schritte. Nähe suchte und fand eine Begegnung mit fremden Kulturen, hier speziell Japan. In all diesen Unternehmungen war Javier Hagen ihr wichtiger Co-Komponist. 2006 wurde sie mit dem Preis der Vontobel Stiftung für Kreatives Alter ausgezeichnet. 2008 entstand die Porträt CD Es war einst ein Paradies. Maria Portens bisher erfolgreichstes Werk lebelight entstand auf Texte von Ivar Breitenmoser und verdankt seine Beliebtheit der musikalisch mitreißenden Interpretation des Duos ums n’ jip. 2009 erhielt Maria Porten von der Gesellschaft Rezital einen Kompositionsauftrag. In der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Lyriker Walter Studer entstand Zauber-Frauen-Zauber, das 2010 im Rahmen des Konzertes NeueneuemusiK zusammen mit pong-ping, der neuesten Arbeit von Werner Bärtschi, zur Aufführung gelangt. Ebenfalls zusammen mit Walter Studer komponierte sie & Männer, das nach seiner Uraufführung im privaten Rahmen 2011 zum ersten Mal öffentlich vorgeführt wird. Für März 2011 ist Stadtjespräch nach plattdeutschen Texten von Ludwig Soumagne und Gedichten aus Paroles von Jacques Prévert zur Uraufführung bereit. Im Herbst 2010 wurde auf Anregung von Maria Porten in Zürich der Verein für inszenierte Konzerte gegründet. www.porten.ch

Andreas Zurbriggen. Andreas Zurbriggen was raised in Saas-Fee (Valais). After completing his education at the college in Brig, he graduated from a course in composition under the tutelage of Daniel Glaus at Bern University of the Arts in 2009. His fragile music is characterised by the renewed listening of reputedly surmounted musical material and its integration into a modern context. Andreas Zurbriggen was the 2009 young composer at the 24th Davos Festival – young artists in concert. His work has been performed at several festivals, including at forum::wallis, Davos Festival, Musikfestival Bern and at the Shanghai International New Music Week, and has been interpreted by various ensembles such as the voice-recorder duo Ums ´n Jip, the Ensemble Laboratorium, the Orchester der Haute École de Musique Lausanne Site de Sion, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg and the South Korean vocal quintet Cool~a Cappella. Zurbriggen's piece North of Alexandria (after a poem by Rolf Hermann) is part of the film music for the South Korean film Bul Ga Sa Ri (2010). Andreas Zurbriggen is currently studying musicology and history at the University of Bern.

Max E. Keller was one of the first free jazz musicians in Switzerland. From 1966 until 1973 he followed his own concept performing free jazz and improvised music on the piano and electronic instruments in concerts or for radio recordings in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Since 1973 Keller has produced over 90 compositions for various forces including electronic music. He often sets texts to music, examples include his ‘Gesänge II’ (Erich Fried); ‘Gesänge III’ (Jürg Weibel) and ‘Gesänge IV’ (Kurt Marti); ‘Konfigurationen’ (I, II and III – various authors); ‘Deformationen’ (self-written texts); the feature-length cantata ‘Fontamara’ (Ignazio Silone), the mini-opera ‘Egon – aus dem Leben eines Bankbeamten’ (Hans Suter) and the chamber opera ‘Die Axt’ after Max Frisch’s ‘Graf Öderland’ (2004-2006), a commission for the Komischen Oper Berlin. Performances and radio broadcasts in the whole of Europe, Australia, North and South America, Russia, Mongolia, Korea and Azerbaijan are a part of his career history. Keller began improvising again after 1985 and since 1985 is responsible for the programme and organisation of contemporary music and jazz concerts at the ‘Theater am Gleis’ in Winterthur. 1985 - Swiss representative at the biennale in Berlin, 1991 - Swiss representative at the IGNM Weltmusiktagen in Zurich, 1993 - Swiss representative in Mexico, 1997 - Art prize of the Carl-Heinrich-Ernst-Foundation in Winterthur, 1999 - Berlin stipend, 2001 - Project contribution (commission from the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich), 2003 - Contribution to the artistic work of the Aargauer Kuratorium. ‘Sicher sein ...’ (speaker and electronic tape) and ‘Repetitionen I-V’ (harpsichord) were recorded onto LP and ‘Pentalog’ (orchestra) and ‘Sie’ (speaker and electronic tape) onto CD; two CDs (col legno and Jecklin Edition) are dedicated solely to his chamber musical works, a third CD (Grammont-Portrait) containing five chamber musical works and one orchestral work (Tonhalle-Orchester conducted by David Zinman) was released in 2003. http://www.max-e-keller.ch/

Markus Hofer. Geb. 1949. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit als Flötist und Ensembleleiter, spielt er im Quartett „ensemble miniature“ und erweitert mit der Kontrabassflöte den Tonumfang des Berner-Querflötenorchesters „Intercity Flute Players“. Für dieses Orchester hat er eigene Kompositionen geschrieben sowie zahlreiche Werke aus verschiedenen Epochen bearbeitet. 2003/2004 erweiterte er seine kompositorischen Fähigkeiten bei Michel Roth (Musikhochschule Luzern) und 2005 bis 2008 bei Isabel Mundry (Musikhochschule Zürich). Markus Hofer ist Autor von zahlreichen Werken in diversen Formationen der Kammermusik. Seit 2008 gehört er zum Leitungsteam vom Festival für neue Musik „l’art pour l’Aar Bern“.

Pierre-André Bovey  was born in Lausanne. He studied flute under André Bosshard in Bern and André Jaunet at the conservatory in Zurich. He studied counterpoint and composition under Rolf Looser. Pierre-André Bovey divides his activities between teaching at Biel Conservatory, performing concerts and composing. He also conducts the Intercity Flute Players flute ensemble.

Ulrike Mayer-Spohn (UMS). While still attending school Ulrike Mayer-Spohn completed her studies for playing organ and choral conducting in Stuttgart and, as a junior student, she studied the recorder at the Karlsruhe Music Academy under Ulrike Mauerhofer. She then continued her education at the Schola Contorum Basiliensis in Switzerland under Conrad Steinmann and Corina Marti (recorder) and Dorothea Winter at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. Masterclasses with Marion Verbruggen, Peter van Heyghen, Sebastien Marq and Gerd Lünenbürger complete her education. Baroque violin and viola she studied with Martina Graulich and David Plantier, fiddle with Randal Cook in Basel, composition and audiodesign with Erik Oña at the “Studio für Elektronische Musik” and the Hochschule für Musik in Basel. She received commissions for the Musikfestival Bern, the Shanghai International New Music Week and for the contemporary music festival forum : : wallis. Ulrike Mayer-Spohn works together with composers as Beat Gysin, Boris Yoffe, Gabriel Pareyon, Andreas Zurbriggen, Paul Newland. Numerous premieres of works dedicated to her she premiered and recorded for Swiss Radio. Together with the Swiss composer and singer Javier Hagen, Ulrike Mayer-Spohn formed in 2007 the duo UmsNJip, which is dedicated to new musical settings for recorder, voice and electronics. Javier Hagen (JIP). Composer and singer born 1971 in Barcelona, raised between 6 languages in Wallis and the Mediterranean. Composition under the tutelage of Heiner Goebbels and Wolfgang Rihm. As a singer both tenor and countertenor, Javier Hagen is one of the most surprising classical singers of his generation. With an exceptional 4 octave vocal range, he has premiered more than 200 oeuvres at the most prestigious European contemporary music festivals collaborating with some of the most distinguished 20th century composers such as Aribert Reimann, Mauricio Kagel, Pierre Mariétan, Peter Eötvös and leading concrete poetry and constructive art artists such as Eugen Gomringer, Mauricio Rosenmann, Rolf Schroeter, Günther Uecker. Guest at festivals for new and early music in Donaueschingen, New York, Hong Kong, Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, Zurich, Lucerne, Geneva, Prague, Bologna, Milan, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin. Numerous recordings for German, French, Czech and Swiss Radio and TV stations. Besides "standard" opera roles like Dardanus, Giulio Cesare, Zsupan and Pappacoda Javier Hagen premiered major roles in contemporary operas such as 'air à l'en verre' by Daniel Mouthon 1997, 'eismeer' by Christoph Schiller 2004, 'poem ohne held' by Regina Irman 2005 and 'esther de racine' by Boris Yoffe 2006. Prize winner of international new music and composition competitions in 2001/4/8 in Basel, Lausanne and Düsseldorf. 2003 publication of his ver-rückten Volkslieder "s´sch mr alles 1 Ding" by "musiques suisses" on CD. Hagen's compositional oeuvre includes the instrumental, scenical and vocal genres as well as electroacoustic and installative works. His vocal works receive particular appreciation and are performed at festivals all around Europe (Europa Cantat Mainz, Klagenfurt and Basel 2004/06/08, Centre Culturel Suisse Paris) as well as in Central America (America Cantat), Canada, China, Corea, Lituania, Israel and the U.S. Together with Ulrike Mayer-Spohn, Hagen forms the duo UMS ´N JIP, which is dedicated to new musical settings for recorder, voice and electronics, being one of the activest contemporary music ensembles worldwide. Jury member of national and international contemporary music and composition contests. Javier Hagen lives in Brig (Valais/Switzerland) and is the director of Swiss contemporary music festival forum : : valais as well as of the AlpenChorFestival. He also presides the Int. Society for Contemporary Music Valais/Switzerland IGNM-VS. Lectures and masterclasses at the universities of Shanghai and Hong Kong, China. Calls for expertises for the Hochschule der Künste HdK Berne as well as for Valais Government (MusiquePRO) and UNESCO. In 2007 Hagen was nominated "Valaisan of the Year". www.javierhagen.ch
